Who is CARE?

CARE Australia is an international humanitarian aid organisation that concentrates on empowering women and girls to fight global poverty providing economic opportunities and addressing discrimination by working with both women and men to achieve gender equality. CARE believes that strong empowered women who have the capacity and freedom to choose their own path will lift themselves, their families and communities out of poverty. Taking a grass-roots approach and aspirational guidance from communities, CARE help to address the underlying causes of poverty and advocates for global responsibility. Last year, CARE helped 83 million people across 84 countries.

How long would it take you to walk 8km carrying 20 kilograms of water on your back or head? Could you even do it?

For millions of African women this is the harsh reality; walking hours each day to collect what they need to survive. Every hour spent walking reduces the amount of time women and girls could spend overcoming poverty by getting an education, accessing health services or earning an income.

Annual Fundraiser

Walk In Her Shoes is CARE Australia’s annual fundraising event that encourages Australian’s from all corners to walk 25, 50 or 100kms over one week engaging them in the plight of women and girls in developing countries. The funds raised for CARE initiatives support programs that help shrink the distance women and girls have to travel by supplying clean water and food closer to home. The hours gained would give them the chance to gain the skills needed to remove themselves and their communities from poverty. Walk In Her Shoes will feature as a full window campaign across all They Body Shop retail stores from 17 February – 9 March 2014.

Join the Walk

Then from 17 – 23 March this thousands of Australians will participate in the challenge and raise funds that reduce the distances that women and girls have to walk – giving them the opportunity to go to school, or earn an income. Over two years, The Body Shop and its customers have raised over $400,000 to help break the cycle of poverty for women and girls in developing countries. Join the Challenge this year so we can continue this great work.
